Transcript (Glen Hansard on DecPlay Piano)
Hello, my name is Glen Hansard, and I've just been sitting here working through the DecPlay method of playing piano here with Declan Cosgrove, and I got to say I'm really knocked out.
It's incredibly simple. I can't believe I'm able to play songs like Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen, a song I never thought I'd be able to play on piano.
I'm able to play it (instantly) just by looking at the sheet.
It's an amazing way to tune into your ear and and to get away from all of the daunting (notation) notes. Even though I know what the notation notes are, I've read them and I've studied them, I've never quite got comfortable with reading music.
And so this is an incredible way to learn piano. A bit like what Tablature (tabs) was for guitar when I was a kid. I wouldn't have learned all those great Dylan songs without tablature.
And this is a really direct way into the chords. And so I couldn't recommend it highly enough.
Declan Cosgrove performing with Glen Hansard
Using the DecPlay method, Declan Cosgrove was able to accompany Glen Hansard, playing the entire set of songs on the last night of the 2022 Irish tour, with only a few hours notice.
Playing with Glen and his amazing band (Colm Mac Con Iomaire, Joe Doyle and Graham Hopkins), Declan played over a dozen songs that he had never played before and many new songs from the forthcoming album that he had never even heard before.
This speed of learning was possible due to the incredibly simple numbers and patterns method that DecPlay uses to identify the fundamental patterns in each song, within seconds. DecPlay also makes playing by ear and improvisation much easier and faster, than using traditional piano methods.
